Why are pokemon cards worth so much money?

to some, five dollars is a lot. my little brother just started collecting pokemon cards...when i was little i never got into it. why are the cards worth so much money?

Why are pokemon cards worth so much money?
The outrageous prices for single Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards has to do with price indexing. High prices for some card game singles exist in almost every card game out there. Here's basically how it works: card collector magazines and websites essentially operate according to nationwide or regional polls of retailers who carry single cards for sale. The price index can vary greatly from area to area, as not all people value cards the same. Ridiculous prices usually occur for one of three reasons: 1) the card was improperly playtested and ends up being so powerful that it completely dominates a game system (like the Black Lotus in Magic); 2) the print run for a certain card is extremely short, and the player demand for the card outstrips the availability of it (some unscrupulous companies purposely make short print runs to unethically drive up demand); or 3) some idiot parents with more money than brains offer ridiculous amounts for cards their kids 'just can't live without having.'
Reply:Pokemon is a popular television program wich means that the cards are poular.

If the cards are popular they will sell alot wich means that if there expencive the company gets more money.
Reply:I don't understand why. My son has tons of them. He uses them as currency.
Reply:Supply and demand.

They print only a few of some cards and declare them as "rare" and that ups their value to collectors.

If people were not willing to pay that for them, they would be worth nothing.
Reply:They ARE???
Reply:It's supply and demand. When I was collecting the *original* series of Pokemon cards, a Charazard card was worth $20. It was unreal.
Reply:because people made it that way when thay demanded it. or it was made frome a special tree jk lol
Reply:they are not making them anymore cause Pokemon cards are not the latest fad so they shut down production or is making less. but when items go into less makings of it it get's more expensive
Reply:it's like lottery tickets. first off, people are going to pay however much the cards are because they MIGHT by chance pick up one of the rare and valuable cards.

so if people always think they might amass some huge sum of money by getting some specific card and if people will pay the high prices...why wouldnt card manufactureres charge so much?
Reply:The very same reason a cardboard Mickey Mantle rookie card is worth up to $50K. Collectibles, particularly rare or vintage "things," are highly desired by collectors, many of whom have more $$ than brains. Supply %26amp; demand indeed.

My Son recently sold his set of 8-10 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figures on eBay..........are you ready for this.......$650.00

Watch an episode of Antiques Road show sometime....people bring in "junk" that I wouldn't even have in my home, and many times they have 5-figure values !!
Reply:coz people think there good. Even though its a bit of card with an image printed.
Reply:They aren't they are only 3.50 per pack or something around there!
Reply:it's not really that they are worth anything at all...it's just that people "think" that they are worth something, so they are willing to pay for them, thnking that they can get something in return...it's a cycle
Reply:They only have value if someone wants them. If somebody wants them enough, they will pay what you ask.
Reply:A thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Clearly, people want them enough to pay up.
Reply:Just like beenie babies, a few people begin the hype and it catches on.
Reply:Hello,

One of my teenager has collected his for some time now, years even.

I did not realize they are worthy of collecting, I guess he has....

Thanks for the heads up.
Reply:ermmm stupid companys like to make money by scamming kids you do it in bussiness when u reach high school
Reply:They are? I don't kno why. I hated that show. The only part of it I liked is when Pikatchu (is that how it's spelled?) is all cute saying "pik-ah-choo!".

Digimon is way better (1st and 2nd seasons are anyway).

I collected beanie babies myself (I have 57 of them, I believe), but those are not for sale.
Reply:supply and demand. people think that the more money they cost, the cooler they are, and so the demand goes up.
Reply:there rare duh
Reply:PALIN OLD 'HYPE' AND 'MARKETING PLOY'
Reply:does pokemon exist??? like i thought it was over!
